Bong vs Bubbler vs Dab Rig
They all use water, they’re all glass, and they all look kind of similar on the shelf. Here’s how to tell them apart and pick the right one.
Water pipes come in a few flavors, and the names get used loosely, so it’s easy to grab the wrong thing. The quickest way to sort them: what are you using, and how portable do you need it to be?
Bong — the classic
A bong is the full-size water pipe most people picture: a tall base with water, a bowl for dry flower, and a stem. The water cools and filters the smoke, which is why a bong hits smoother than a dry pipe. Bigger bongs and added percolators filter more but are less portable. If you’re smoking flower at home, this is your workhorse.
Bubbler — the portable middle ground
A bubbler is basically a mini bong in a handheld pipe shape. It uses water for a smoother hit than a dry pipe, but it’s compact and portable — a nice in-between for people who want water filtration without a big piece to store. Also for dry flower. Great as a travel or on-the-go option.
Dab rig — for concentrates
A dab rig looks similar but is a different tool. Instead of a bowl for flower, it has a banger (or nail) that you heat, then apply a concentrate (wax, shatter, rosin) to. Rigs are built for concentrates, not flower, and are usually smaller with tighter percolation to preserve flavor. If you dab, this is what you need — and you’ll want the tools to go with it (torch, carb cap).
Quick comparison
| Uses | Portable? | Best for | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bong | Dry flower | No (usually) | Smooth home sessions |
| Bubbler | Dry flower | Yes | On-the-go water filtration |
| Dab rig | Concentrates | Sometimes | Dabbing wax/shatter/rosin |
Which should you get?
Simple decision tree: flower at home → bong. Flower, but you move around → bubbler. Concentrates → dab rig. If you do both flower and concentrates, some setups convert between the two — ask us.
