Indica vs Sativa vs Hybrid
“Indica for night, sativa for day” is the shorthand everyone knows. It’s a decent starting point — and also a bit of a myth. Here’s the fuller picture.
Walk up to any flower counter and the first question is usually “indica or sativa?” It’s a useful shorthand, but it’s worth knowing what those words actually mean — and what they don’t.
The classic breakdown
- Indica — the “in-da-couch” one. Traditionally described as heavier, more relaxing, better for winding down at night.
- Sativa — brighter and more energetic. The daytime, stay-active choice.
- Hybrid — a cross of both, leaning whichever direction the specific strain was bred toward.
That framework works well enough to shop by, and it’s how we’ll point you in the store. But here’s the part most people don’t know.
Why the labels aren’t the whole story
Originally, “indica” and “sativa” described the plant’s shape and growth, not its effects. Decades of crossbreeding means almost everything on the market today is a hybrid of a hybrid. So the indica/sativa label is more of a general vibe than a guarantee — two “indicas” can feel totally different.
What actually drives how a strain feels is a mix of its cannabinoid content and, crucially, its terpenes — the aromatic compounds that give each strain its smell and character. A relaxing strain often has more of certain terpenes; an energizing one, others. (We go deep on this in what are terpenes.)
How to actually pick flower
Instead of leaning only on the label, do this:
- Start with the goal. Relax and sleep, or stay social and active? Tell us and we’ll narrow it down.
- Smell it. Seriously — aroma is your best clue to the terpene profile. If it smells amazing to you, you’ll probably enjoy it.
- Check freshness. Good flower is frosty with trichomes and slightly springy, not dry and crumbly.
- Note what you liked. Remember the strains that worked for you — that pattern beats the label every time.
Effects also depend on you — your tolerance, your body, even your mood and setting. The same strain can hit two people differently, so treat any label as a starting point, not a promise.
