How to Read a Lab Report (COA)

Every reputable hemp product comes with a lab report. Most people never look at it — here’s how to read one in about a minute and know what you’re buying.

Updated July 2026 · iSmokee Orlando & Kissimmee

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is the receipt that proves a product is what the label claims. Reputable brands test every batch with an independent lab and make the COA available — often via a QR code on the package. If a product doesn’t have one, that’s a red flag. Here’s what to look at.

1. Is it from a third-party lab?

The whole point is independence. The report should come from an outside, accredited lab — not the brand’s own kitchen. Look for the lab’s name and, ideally, an accreditation (ISO 17025 is the common one). A brand grading its own homework isn’t worth much.

2. Does the batch match?

Check that the batch or lot number on the COA matches the one on your product. Brands should have a current report for the batch you’re holding — not one from two years ago for a different run. An outdated or mismatched COA doesn’t tell you anything about what’s in your hand.

3. The potency panel (cannabinoids)

This is the part most people care about. It lists the cannabinoids and how much of each — usually as a percentage and/or mg per serving. Two things to check:

4. The safety panels (this is the important part)

Potency is nice, but the tests that actually protect you are the contaminant screens. A good COA shows “Pass” on:

If any of these are missing or marked “Fail,” skip the product. Clean potency means nothing if it’s contaminated.

Quick checklist

You don’t need to be a chemist. In under a minute, confirm: independent lab ✓, matching batch ✓, potency matches the label ✓, delta-9 ≤ 0.3% ✓, safety panels all “Pass” ✓. That’s a legit product.

Everything on our shelves — flower, CBD & Delta, gummies — is third-party tested, and we’re happy to pull up a COA in store if you want to see the numbers before you buy. That’s the whole idea.

FAQ

What is a COA?

A Certificate of Analysis is an independent lab report showing a hemp product’s cannabinoid potency and its safety tests (pesticides, heavy metals, solvents, mold). Reputable brands provide one for every batch, often via a QR code.

What should I check on a lab report?

Confirm it’s from an independent, accredited lab; that the batch number matches your product; that potency matches the label; that delta-9 THC is at or under 0.3% by dry weight; and that all safety panels say “Pass.”

Why do the safety tests matter more than potency?

Because clean potency means nothing if the product is contaminated. The pesticide, heavy-metal, solvent and mold panels are what actually protect you — always check they pass.

What if a product has no COA?

Treat it as a red flag and skip it. A missing lab report means you can’t verify what’s in the product or whether it’s safe. Everything iSmokee stocks is third-party tested.
