Vape Nicotine Strength, Explained

“5%,” “50 mg,” “nic salt” — the labels sound technical, but the idea is simple. Here’s how to figure out the right strength for you.

Updated July 2026 · iSmokee Orlando & Kissimmee

Most people grab a disposable without thinking about the nicotine number, then wonder why it feels too harsh or not strong enough. It’s worth 60 seconds to understand, because it’s the difference between a device you love and one you toss.

What 5% actually means

Nicotine strength is shown two ways that mean the same thing: a percentage (like 5%) or milligrams per milliliter (like 50 mg/mL). 5% = 50 mg/mL. Most disposables in the U.S. are 5% (50 mg) — that’s the standard, and it’s strong.

You’ll also see the term nicotine salt (“nic salt”). That’s the type of nicotine used in almost all disposables. Nic salts feel smoother going down than old-school “freebase” nicotine, which is how a device can deliver a strong 5% hit without feeling like sandpaper.

Which strength is right for you?

You are…Look for
A heavier former smoker (pack-a-day)5% (50 mg) — the standard
A lighter or social user2–3% if available, or a smoother device
New to nicotine entirelyLower strength, and take it easy
Finding 5% too harsh / dizzyDrop to a lower % or a smoother-hitting model

If a device makes you lightheaded, coughy or queasy, that’s usually too much nicotine, too fast — not a defect. Slow down, or step down a strength.

Strength vs how much you vape

Here’s a thing people miss: a lower-nicotine device doesn’t automatically mean less nicotine overall, because you might just puff more to compensate. And a bigger-capacity device (say a RAZ RX 50K vs a smaller Geek Bar Pulse) holds more total nicotine simply because it holds more e-liquid. The strength (%) is about each puff; the capacity is about how long it lasts. Two different numbers.

The bottom line

If you’re a regular user, 5% is the norm and you’ll be fine. If you’re newer, lighter, or 5% feels like too much, ask us for a lower strength or a device known for a smoother draw — we sort people to the right one every day. And of course, all nicotine vapes are 21+ with valid ID. Not sure which device? Start with our how to choose a disposable vape guide, or browse the wall.

Nicotine is an addictive chemical. These products are for adults 21+ only. If you don’t already use nicotine, there’s no benefit to starting.

FAQ

What does 5% nicotine mean on a vape?

It means 50 mg of nicotine per milliliter (5% = 50 mg/mL). It’s the standard strength for U.S. disposables and it’s strong. You may also see lower strengths like 2–3%.

Is 5% nicotine too much for a beginner?

It can be. If 5% makes you lightheaded, coughy or queasy, that’s usually too much nicotine too fast. Newer or lighter users often do better with a lower strength or a smoother-hitting device.

What is nicotine salt (nic salt)?

Nic salt is the type of nicotine used in almost all disposables. It feels smoother than old-school freebase nicotine, which lets a device deliver a strong hit without harshness.

Does a bigger vape have more nicotine?

A higher-capacity device holds more total nicotine because it holds more e-liquid, but the strength per puff is set by the percentage. Strength (%) is per-puff; capacity (puff count) is how long it lasts.
